New Islington Footbridge

This was our entry for a RIBA Competition to design a footbridge over a canal in the New Islington redevelopment scheme by Alsop and Urban Splash.

It was the first project we worked on together.

We were inspired by lily pads, floating lanterns and stepping stones. These all form informal networks that are extremely beautiful. When we explored this in model form, we quickly realized that in order to capture their seemingly arbitrary patterns, we had use a random method. We let the disc fall onto the model without trying to infulence them.
